In Memoriam
Red Laptop, January 2009-June 2009
Dear Red Laptop,
I did not know you long. I would have liked to have gotten to know you better. To be honest, in our short acquaintance I didn’t figure out enough about what makes you tick to ensure that our relationship went smoothly. And now you are gone. I am filled with regrets.
Mostly I regret that I wasn’t able to teach the one who runs not to run in the room where running isn’t allowed. It was manslaughter not murder, but you are gone just the same. Your DNA may survive [I hope, cross your fingers everyone], but we will never compose blog posts together again.
I miss you already. Your loss changes everything. My freedom is gone. And spontaneity–blogging here, there, everywhere–is just a memory.
Please don’t be offended to learn that I’m already thinking about dating other computers. I know it’s soon, but I have needs. Honestly, what I need is to make a substantial commitment and soon [whether we can afford it--that's a different question]. I don’t know which model would be my best match. Someone thinner? Someone smarter? Someone faster or cheaper? I’m not sure, but I’ve learned this: sturdier is better than handsome. I’m eyeing your brothers and cousins, and I’m dreaming of strangers [different brands] as well. But I really wish I didn’t have to replace you at all.
Goodbye.
Pmom

As an aside, kids + mobile technology = disaster/expense
Beware small hands that covet thy cell phone, lest it meet a similar fate.
Yes, my cell phone just met that fate. The third cell phone in our family to drown, although this last one has a much more exciting story to it than simply being left in someone’s pocket and washed. Seriously, you’d think with all the technological advances these days, they could figure out how to waterproof these things. That’d be a serious selling point for me.
And, was that a haiku? I don’t think I’ve ever read a haiku written for a computer before. Go HDD.
Sorry to hear about your laptop. I think I recall reading that you are a linux user? So are you looking for laptop without an OS?
I bought my current laptop in early 2006. It was one of the first Macbook Pros and I really love it. I don’t think I have ever had a laptop last this long. I usually make it 2 years at most with a work laptop. This one however, has really hung in there. It is dented and it is missing the F9 key and the other day I had to shove my car key into the DVD slot to “straighten” it enough to allow the disc to be ejected but it still works like a charm. Oh yes — the letters ASDELC and N have completely worn off and the silver underpaint with them.
This computer has been dropped from shoulder height by me when my bag broke (twice), kicked off the bed by me, Kacy, and my kids, survived beatings by children ranging from age 0 to 11 years and been my travel companion for 3.5 years. I didn’t mean for this to become some sort of Mac advertisement, but I am a huge fan. It isn’t just pretty, it’s pretty dang tough too.
Wow, Christian. You almost make me consider a Mac. I have always been a dyed in the wool PC person, but between unhappiness with my two most recent PC’s, and my mother’s recommendation, and Sharon’s, and yours, I am starting to be tempted. Of course, I don’t think any laptop would survive being hurled screen down from a heighth of six feet screen down on to the tile!
