Preparing for the Inauguration

We can take this moment and savor the opportunity we have of witnessing a peaceful transition to power.  Our nation faces many troubles, but we can take a day or two away from worrying about that to be thankful for what we have: our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, our rule of law, and for the most part, peace at home.

There are other things to do as Inauguration Day approaches.

We can share this with our children as we explain why having our first African American president is a big deal.  And how amazing it is, given the scope of human history, that President Bush will simply go home and President Obama will simply move in.  No one will bleed or lose his head.

Hands on activities will help make Inauguration Day a true event in children’s minds–check out this do it yourself pop up book.  Also, Rarely Home Mom recommended a book about the White House that older children might like.

Educate Yourself: The joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies has a comprehensive inauguration website.  For those of us who have to stay home, the interesting part of the website is here (go see!  It’s neat) where they talk about the elements of Inauguration Day and the history behind it.  I also liked their compilation of facts and firsts.

See/Watch/Listen: Some will get to attend the inauguration in person.  But given the distance, the crowds and the cold, most of us will not be there.  Choose to be part of history by participating from home.  The inauguration will be on television, on National Public Radio and will stream on the internet.

Finally, as we approach inauguration day, the most important thing most of us can do is to pray for Mr. Obama. We can pray that he will act on his best motives, that he will have able and wise advisors, that he will have the gift of discernment in choosing whom to listen to, that he will remain close to God, and that he will perform to the best of his ability and beyond it with heaven’s help.

God bless our 44th president!
