General Conference

In October, Amelia and I were able to do something I have wanted to do for years. We attended the General Conference of my church . Pdad kindly stayed home with the littles. General Conference comes two weekends a year. I look forward to it because our prophet (as well as other Church leaders) speaks and gives us counsel and encouragement for the year ahead. Since it is a conference for the entire Church, in addition to everyone who listens via TV, radio, internet, and satellite broadcast, thousands and thousands of people gather in Salt Lake City. I had never attended in person, but had always wanted to, and this year Amelia was old enough so we were able to make the trek. I don’t think we’ll do it very often–after waiting for a couple of hours to get in, sitting in a nice warm comfortable seat in the Conference Center didn’t enhance my ability to pay attention. I do better at home.

Nonetheless, attending in person is something every Latter-day Saint should do given the opportunity. It is neat to have that feeling of gathering with brothers and sisters from so many different places with one purpose. The grounds at Temple Square are beautiful and impressive. Since we didn’t have tickets, Amelia and I ended up sitting outside in light rain on a cold granite bench for a couple of hours. The missionaries urged us to go inside to the warm overflow hall, but we were intent on getting seats inside the actual Conference Center itself, so we stayed in line (it was the right choice!). Our little sacrifice to hear the prophet speak and see him in person gave us just the teeny-tiniest taste of what Saints in other times and other places have sacrificed to live their religion and hear the word of God. That was very neat. It was just sadly ironic that we then had trouble staying awake when we finally got inside!

[Pmom!] I saw this link on my blog and was trying to figure out who on earth it was until you let loose the info about you getting your picture in the Ensign! I distinctly remember asking for info on your blog and not getting it. Shame, shame. J/K But now I know, I can check back. See you in cyberspace (and probably at some upcoming holiday parties)!

    Hi Robin,

I was surprised to see that I had a comment awaiting moderation on my blog. You are officially the first commenter on my new blog. Cool!

Don’t worry, I was definitely planning on sending you a notice of my new blog, it’s just that I’m a perfectionist and I was trying to get it more presentable before advertising it. I am still in the midst of copying over old posts and trying to work out some of the kinks in the design. I really wanted to use a fancy chancery font for the titles on the blog, but then when everything was ready to go I discovered that the fancy font didn’t include exclamation points or question marks. I have trouble writing a title that doesn’t include a question mark or an exclamation, so now I’m trying to figure out what to do. Match the graphic buttons as closely as possible (that’s what I’m trying now), switch to some sort of a more plain block font that is obviously not trying to match the buttons, or discipline myself and not use any special characters in the titles? Suffice it to say, this issue is driving me crazy.

Anyway, it is very cool that you found my link to your blog and followed it back. I just put up my links page late last night! I like your blog a lot and I’ve been excited that you’ve been writing more.
