The Rx Saga Continues

So today I went to Costco to get my new prescription filled. I was assured that this one will be safe for nursing since it is topical rather than oral. Finally, I can get rid of this infection. I pick up my prescription and head for the milk aisle. Oh, but what’s that? Duncan needs to go to the bathroom. We turn and head the other direction. While waiting for Duncan, I open the stapled pharmacy bag. I take the package insert out of the box and begin reading. It says the usual “Full clinical trials of difficult-to-pronounce-drug have not been done, but levels in plasma are similar to when hard-to-pronounce drug is taken orally. Due to tumorgenicity in mice and rats . . . . What? So my new more expensive, less convenient (because topical rather than oral) prescription, will have the same effect on my bloodstream (and presumably my milk) as the first prescription? The prescription with the big “DO NOT USE IF BREASTFEEDING” flap on the label?

So,
1. My infection is still untreated, and it’s almost a week later.
2. I want a new doctor.

Wow! Are you able to get a refund???

I was unable to get a refund for my first prescription. I don’t blame Costco for this. They filled the prescription correctly, it’s just that my doctor gave me a bad prescription. They put the bottle with the warning label on it in a bag, so I didn’t see the warning label until I got home and they can’t take things back after they’ve been in your possession.

With the second one, they didn’t want to take it back (because of the possession rule), but I hadn’t yet left the store, and they were able to check the tube and see that the seal wasn’t broken and that the package of applicators was intact, so they agreed to give me my money back.

I am wondering how much money my insurance company is losing on this (and thus indirectly all of us who pay big money for medical insurance) because my copays are modest, but I don’t know what the insurance portion is.

My main gripe is the time. Two separate trips to Costco with 3 yr old and baby, three different times standing in line–it’s not cool.

Of course, I would have had an even bigger gripe had I actually taken these medications and realized later that I risked harming my baby.
